Penn State edges Southern Cal

LOS ANGELES Penn State left southern California with a split showing after outlasting No. 13 Southern California in a five-set marathon to close the AVCA Showcase at Pauley Pavilion.

The No. 9 Nittany Lions had four players post double digits in kills in the 23-25, 25-21, 28-26, 19-25, 17-15 victory, which followed a four-set loss to UCLA on Thursday.

Aidan Albrecht led the way with 18 kills and three aces, while 15 kills each came from Matt McLaren, Jalen Penrose and Cal Mende. Luke Braswell directed the offense to .285 hitting with his 60 assists, and Braswell and Penrose also had four blocks apiece.

Jack Wyett’s 20 kills and Sam Lewis’ 11 blocks paced the Trojans.

Penn State (3-1) continues its challenging stretch with a visit to No. 1 and defending champion Ohio State on Jan. 28. The Buckeyes beat USC on Thursday and lost to UCLA on Saturday.
