Women’s basketball
Lady Lions control game in win over Illinois
UNIVERSITY PARK With nine seconds left in the first quarter, Teniya Page hit a trey to break a tie — and the Lady Lions went on cruise control after that, leading the rest of Tuesday’s game en route to a 68-59 victory over Illinois (9-12, 0-7 Big Ten).
Page finished with a game-high 18 points, to go along with six rebounds and a team-high four assists. Amari Cooper chipped in 12 points, while Jaida Travascio-Green knocked in 10.
The Lady Lions took a 14-11 lead after the first quarter and led by at least two the rest of the way. An 11-2 run in the second quarter added to their cushion inside the Bryce Jordan Center.
Penn State (12-8, 3-4) will next take on Purdue on the road at noon Sunday.
Men’s lacrosse
PSU starts preseason ranked No. 12
The Penn State men’s lacrosse team found itself ranked No. 12 Tuesday in the USILA/Nike Lacrosse Division I Preseason Coaches poll.
The Nittany Lions are just one of five ranked Big Ten teams. The others include Maryland (No. 1), Rutgers (No. 7), Ohio State (No. 8) and Johns Hopkins (No. 11).
Penn State will open its season Feb. 3 against Villanova.
