Men’s lacrosse

Villanova upsets No. 12 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK Unranked Villanova stunned the No. 12 Penn State men’s lacrosse team in overtime Saturday, beating the Nittany Lions 17-16 in the season opener.

The Nittany Lions led 14-9 heading into the fourth quarter — but the Wildcats rallied to outscore Penn State 7-2 in the final period to tie up the game. That resulted in overtime, where Villanova’s John Kluh scored an unassisted goal with 3:10 left to win.

Ryan Keenan scored five goals for the Nittany Lions, while Kevin Hill added three goals. Others with multiple scores for Penn State were Mac O’Keefe (2), Nick Spillane (2) and Jack Kelly (2).

Both teams made 13 saves.

The Nittany Lions will hope to rebound Saturday against Hobart.

Men’s tennis

PSU sweeps 2 opponents

UNIVERSITY PARK Penn State swept two opponents Saturday, winning 7-0 over both Buffalo and Temple.

Only a combined four singles matches needed third sets Saturday.

Among the Penn State singles players who went 2-0 over the weekend were Constant De La Bassetiere, Christian Lakoseljac, Alp Sentay, Gabriel Nemeth, Christos Antonopoulos and Ben Lieb.

The Nittany Lions (3-2) will next take on Memphis on Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y.

Men’s track and field

Nittany Lions win Cup

UNIVERSITY PARK The No. 8 Penn State men’s track and field team cruised to a first-place finish at its own Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup, beating the runner-up by more than 140 points.

Colin Abert paced the Nittany Lions with a sub-four-minute mile in 3 minutes, 59.51 seconds — which is the ninth-best mile in the NCAA so far.

Other Penn State individual winners included William Henderson (60m, long jump), Gary Ross (600m), Jordan Makins (800m), Bryce Williams (triple jump), Ben Peterson (shot put) and David Lucas (35-pound weight throw).

Women’s track and field

Penn State finishes 2nd

UNIVERSITY PARK The No. 24 Penn State women’s track and field team placed second at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup, as Cornell won by 18.5 points.

Individual winners for the Nittany Lions included Victoria Tachinski (400m), Frances Bull (600m), Greta Lindsley (mile), Obeng Marfo (shot put) and Hannah Mulhern (pole vault). 

Men’s volleyball

Nittany Lions slay Mastadons

UNIVERSITY PARK No. 9 Penn State needed to work extra for a win in Rec Hall’s South Gym, but managed to hold off No. 15 Fort Wayne in four sets.

A night after needing five sets to beat Ball State, the Nittany Lions prevailed Saturday 30-28, 19-25, 29-27, 25-15.

Penn State got 15 kills from Jalen Penrose and 13 from Matt McLaren, with each posting eight digs. Kevin Gear added 12 kills, Jason Donorovich registered seven blocks, Royce Clemens picked up nine digs, and Luke Braswell directed the offense to .393 hitting with his 54 assists.

Colton Stone’s 14 kills paced the Mastadons (8-1).

Penn State (5-2) visits St. Francis next Saturday.
