Penn State athletics reports 20 new positive COVID-19 results out of 830 tests

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics released its 10th round of COVID-19 test results Wednesday, reporting 20 new positives out of 830 tests conducted from Sept. 12-18.

The Nittany Lions previously set single-round highs in their eighth and ninth rounds of testing. Last week, the department reported 50 new positives out of 859 tests in its ninth round of results. And on Sept. 9, Penn State announced it had paused team activities for “several programs” after its eighth round of testing revealed 48 new positives out of 920 tests.

The department has had 129 total positives out of 3,882 tests so far through 10 rounds of testing. Penn State began testing athletes upon their return to campus June 8 and released the first round of results July 1.

Per usual, neither the sports nor the identities of the individuals to test positive were revealed.

As part of protocols established in Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics’ return to campus plan, athletes who test positive are put into isolation for 14 days before being retested. Contact tracing procedures have also been implemented, “which includes quarantine and testing for those individuals who might have been exposed, even if asymptomatic.”

Penn State will kick off its football season Oct. 24 on the road against Indiana.
