Fatherly, Harris lead Penn State track & field

Rachel Fatherly broke the meet and school records in the shot put Saturday to highlight Penn State’s day in the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup at Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

Fatherly, who won the weight throw Friday, heaved the shot put 56 feet, 8 inches (17.27 meters) on her very first attempt to break the records.

“On that first throw I told myself `stay down and relax’ and then I hit it and I knew it was huge,” said senior Rachel Fatherly. “I walked out of the circle I ran back to the measuring tape and it was over 17.20 meters so I knew it was a school record and I started jumping and screaming in excitement.”

Jon Yohman won the same event on the men’s side.

Isaiah Harris broke the meet record in the 800 in 1 minute, 47.31 seconds. Riley Gaibler added a win in the 600. The 400 saw wins from State College graduate Alex Shisler for the men and Tichina Rhodes for the women.

Kaitlyn Lopez was first in the triple jump, while Chisom Ifedi and Ahmenah Richardson earned high jump titles. Penn State also was tops in the 1,600-meter relay.
