Nittany Lions softball team opens season with 2 losses

Penn State started its season with a pair of losses Friday, falling 2-0 to Wright State and 4-3 to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic.

Penn State’s Marlaina Laubach took the loss against Wright State, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings. She also had six strikeouts and gave up three walks. Wright State scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Mollie Sorenson and Shelby Miller each had two hits to pace the Nittany Lions.

In the second game, Penn State took a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning, but SIUE tied it on a two-run double by Tess Eby. Alyssa Heren’s RBI triple in the seventh proved to be the difference.

Penn State’s Madison Seifert allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings in the loss. Lexi Knief went 2 for 4 and scored two runs for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State (0-2) takes on SIUE at 9 a.m. Saturday and Tulsa at 3:45 p.m.
