PSU softball gets in win column

The Penn State softball team earned its first win of the season, needing nine innings to beat Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 2-1 on Saturday morning in the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic.

The Nittany Lions followed with an 11-4 loss to Tulsa later in the afternoon, with Shelby Miller collecting five hits and three RBIs over the two games.

Miller knocked in the game-winner in the ninth against SIUE with a single to score Mollie Sorenson. Scoreless after seven innings, a Reina Furuya sacrifice fly plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to answer a run in the top of the inning.

The Nittany Lions pounded out 10 hits against the Golden Hurricane later in the day in the loss. Tulsa also had 10 hits and chased starter Madison Shaffer after just one-third of an inning. Shaffer allowed three hits and five runs, four earned.

Jocelyn Sheffield had the big blow to seal the win with a fifth-inning grand slam.

Penn State faces tournament host Florida Atlantic on Sunday.
