Penn State softball rides offense to 2 wins
Penn State cruised to a pair of wins behind its offense at the Dolphin Invitational, beating Georgetown 9-4 and Radford 8-0 in five innings Friday.
Shelby Miller paced the offensive effort, going 5 for 6, scoring once and driving in two runs in both games. The Nittany Lions finished 23 hits on the day, including a season-high 12 in the win over Radford.
Against the Hoyas, Nittany Lions scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and added five runs in the third to take a 9-2 lead.
Miller’s two-run single highlighted Penn State’s four-run second inning. Five players drove in five runs as part of the Nittany Lion’ six-hit third. Tori Dubois went 3 for 4, scored two runs and drove in another, and Reina Furuya was 1 for 3 to go with two runs and an RBI.
Marlaina Laubach got the win after allowing two runs in two innings. Madison Seifert allowed two runs in five innings of relief for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State stayed hot at the plate to beat Radford.
The Nittany Lions broke the game open by scoring five runs with two outs in the fourth inning to go ahead 6-0. Penn State scored two runs on an error and a wild pitch to end the game due to the mercy rule in the fifth.
Miller went 3 for 3, while teammates Macy Jones, Alyssa VanDerveer, Mollie Sorenson and Toni Polk each had two hits in the win.
Penn State (3-4) takes on Pittsburgh at 11:30 a.m. and Jacksonville at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
