Softball splits doubleheader with Robert Morris

The Nittany Lions split their Wednesday doubleheader with Robert Morris, losing the first game 3-1 but taking the second contest 8-5.

In the afternoon tilt, Penn State’s Marlaina Laubach was the losing pitcher, surrendering two crucial earned runs on three hits in the second inning. Laubach was replaced after the frame, and a combination of Christy Von Pusch, Madison Shaffer and Madison Seifert finished the game out, allowing one run and two hits total.

The Nittany Lions plated their lone run in the third inning, when Macy Jones drew a walk, stole second and third base, and scored on a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Penn State had more juice at the dish.

The Nittany Lions totaled 10 hits, five of which came in a six-run third inning. Alyssa VanDerveer hit a two-run home run, Macy Jones slapped a two-run single, and Mollie Sorensen had an RBI double in the explosive frame.

Seifert, the starter, and Jessica Cummings allowed five runs (all unearned) in four innings. Pusch tossed a scoreless fifth inning, and Laubach redeemed herself, closing out the final two innings without giving up a run.

Penn State (11-14) travel to Rutgers for a weekend series, starting at 3 p.m. Friday.
