Andrew Mackiewicz defended his 2015 national title Sunday, as he was crowned 2016 Men’s Sabre Champion at the NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships.
Mackiewicz is the third-ever Penn State men’s fencer to earn back-to-back championships.
Mackiewicz defeated Princeton’s Edward Chin 15-11 in the semifinals, and handled Ferenc Valkai of St. John’s in the final by the same score.
“It’s a relieving feeling (winning the title),” Mackiewicz said in a Penn State press release. “To win it back-to-back is something special.”
Teammate and senior captain Kaito Streets also made it to the sabre semifinals, but lost to Valkai 15-11.
