Ohio State ends Penn State’s perfect start in conference play

Penn State dropped both games of its doubleheader against No. 24 Ohio State on Wednesday, ending its perfect start in Big Ten play.

Buckeyes pitcher Shelby Hursh threw a no-hitter to lead the Buckeyes to a 3-0 win in the first game. Hursh struck out 10 and walked three.

Alex Bayne hit a two-run home run to give Ohio State the lead in the bottom of the first.

Marlaina Laubach allowed three runs and six hits in six innings to take the loss.

Ohio State beat Penn State 12-10 in the second game.

The Nittany Lions scored four runs in the third inning to take a 7-6 lead. Macy Jones’ home run and Erin Pond’s three-run double accounted for the scoring in the big inning.

Ohio State tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by Bayne and took the lead for good on Jess Machovina’s RBI single in the fifth.

Laubach allowed six runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief for the loss.

Penn State (17-16, 6-2) begins a three-game road series against Indiana at 6 p.m. Friday.
