Penn State leads own golf tournament

Penn State posted a 6-under opening-day total to lead the field at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on the Blue Course on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions carded rounds of 279-283 for a 562 total, six strokes ahead of West Virginia in the 11-team field.

Penn State is paced by Charles Huntzinger, who is tied for second at 5 under after rounds of 70 and 67 on the 7,202-yard layout. JD Dornes is a shot behind and tied for fourth, Chris Houston is tied for 11th (1 over), Cole Miller is another shot back and tied for 14th and Geoff Vartelas is tied for 45th.

Xavier’s Jose Montano’s 6-under 136 leads the tournament, which closes Sunday.
