Penn State 8th at Big Ten men’s golf tournament

Penn State is in eighth place, 15 strokes off the lead, after the first round of the Big Ten Championships at Victoria National Golf Club on Friday.

The Nittany Lions posted a 6-over 294 total on the 7,083-yard layout. Illinois leads at 9-under 279 in the three-day tournament.

JD Dornes is pacing Penn State with his opening-round 2-under 70 to tie for sixth. He’s followed by Charles Huntzinger (tie-15, 72), Cole Miller (tie-37, 75), Geoff Vartelas (tie-50, 77) and Chris Houston (tie-55, 78).

The Illini’s Charlie Danielson and Maryland’s Joe Brooks lead the field at 4-under 68.
