Late runs give Wolverines win in opener softball opener with Nittany Lions

No. 2 Michigan scored three runs in the seventh inning to beat Penn State 4-2 Friday to open the weekend’s three-game series at Beard Field.

The Nittany Lions (28-19) had trouble catching up with Megan Betsa, who pitched a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts while walking one. Alyssa VanDerveer had both hits, clubbing a solo home run in the second. An Erin Pond ground out in the seventh plated the other run.

In the top of the seventh, Sierra Lawrence clubbed a two-run homer and Kelsey Susalla, who was 3 for 4, added an RBI triple to put the Wolverines (39-4) ahead. A Sierra Romero RBI double in the third accounted for their other run.

Marlainna Laubach (11-9) took the loss, allowing eight hits and three walks with no strikeouts.

The teams meet again at 3 p.m. Saturday.
