Nittany Lions top Michigan in men’s lacrosse

Nick Aponte, TJ Sanders and Grant Ament each finished with five points to lead No. 18 Penn State to a 14-9 victory over Michigan in its final game of the regular season Saturday.

Aponte had a team-high four goals and one assist, Sanders finished with three goals and two assists and Ament had one goal and four assists for the Nittany Lions (8-6, 2-3), who clinched a berth in the Big Ten tournament.

Penn State used a six-goal run to take a 7-2 lead and went into halftime with a 9-6 lead. The Wolverines (3-10, 0-5) pulled within 9-8 before the Nittany Lions scored five straight goals to put the game away.

Penn State’s Kevin Hill finished with three goals, and Mike Sutton had two goals.

The Nittany Lions are the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten tournament and take on top-seeded Maryland at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Johns Hopkins’ Homewood Field. Second-seeded Rutgers faces third-seeded Johns Hopkins at 8 p.m. Thursday.

The championship game is set for Saturday at 6 p.m.
