Nittany Lions fall to Illinois in regular season finale

The Penn State softball team managed just three hits in its 9-0 loss in six innings to Illinois on Sunday at Beard Field.

The Nittany Lions finished the regular season with a 29-23 record and went 14-9 in the Big Ten.

Marlaina Laubach allowed two runs and three hits in one inning to take the loss. Madison Seifert gave up seven runs (six earned) and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Allie Bauch went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs to lead Illinois offensively. Nicole Evans went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs for the Fighting Illini (34-20, 12-11).

Penn State is set to host the Big Ten tournament, which runs Thursday through Saturday, at Beard Field.

The Nittany Lions earned the No. 4 seed and will open tournament play in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Penn State will face the winner of Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. first-round matchup between No. 5 Nebraska and No. 12 Purdue.

Other first-round games set for Thursday include: No. 6 Ohio State vs. No 11 Rutgers (noon); No. 7 Illinois vs. No. 10 Michigan State (2:30 p.m.); No. 8 Wisconsin vs. No. 9 Indiana (8 p.m.).

Michigan earned the No. 1 seed, Minnesota is No. 2 and Northwestern is No. 3.

Penn State wrestling extending its winning streak Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, to 57 straight dual with a 37-10 win over Michigan State at Rec Hall. Jason Nolf, Bo Nickal and Vincenzo Joseph all recorded pins.
