Penn State’s Dornes passes 1st U.S. Open test

Penn State golfer JD Dornes succeeded in his first step in making it to the U.S. Open.

The senior carded a 1-under 69 to finish second in a Local Qualifying round at Butler Country Club hosted by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association. Dornes posted a 33 on the front nine and 36 on the back nine of the 6,679-yard layout.

Dornes is one of five golfers who qualified from the Butler event to make the sectionals June 6. Nearly 600 golfers advance from local rounds to sectionals, a 36-hole day held at 10 different courses in the U.S. and two more overseas. The top finishers at sectionals make the field for the U.S. Open, which will be held June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh.

Local qualifying runs from May 2-19 at 111 different sites around the country.

Also at the Butler event, State College’s Brian Short posted a 9-over 79 and did not advance to sectionals.
