Penn State swimmer Shane Ryan broke two Irish national records last week and earned a spot in the Summer Olympics.
Ryan broke the Irish record in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 54.21 seconds at the European Aquatics Championships in London last Monday. On Sunday, he was part of the Irish 400 medley relay team that broke the national record twice, posting a 3:37.47 in the finals.
Ryan, the Nittany Lions’ record holder in the 100-yard backstroke and 50 and 100 freestyles, grew up in Havertown, but his father is a native of Ireland. Ryan took a redshirt season this past school year, taking up residence in Ireland to become eligible to compete for the country. He gained eligibility on May 14.
He will be one of two Nittany Lions this summer in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. John Nunez will swim for the Dominican Republic.
