Trio named captains for Penn State women’s soccer

Brittany Basinger, Nickolette Driesse and Megan Schafer were named team captains for Penn State for the fall as the team prepares to defend its NCAA Championship.

Basinger, a redshirt junior, has played 50 games on defense, starting every match in 2013 and 2015 after missing all of 2014 with an injury. She anchored a defense that did not surrender a goal in six games in the NCAA tournament to win the title.

Driesse netted six goals and four assists in 27 games, starting 20 last season after transferring from Florida State.

Shafer scored 13 goals and assisted on four more as a sophomore, starting 24 games while playing in all 27 and earning second-team All-Big Ten honors.

The Nittany Lions open their season Aug. 19 hosting West Virginia.
