8 Penn State athletes headed to U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials

Penn State will see four current and four more former Nittany Lions chasing after a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team at the Olympic Trials starting Friday.

The Trials will from from July 1-10 at Oregon’s Hayward Field.

The strongest representation will be in the 800-meter run and shot put, with three Lions in each. Casimir Loxsom, Brannon Kidder and Isaiah Harris are all hitting the track for the 800, while the shot put will see Joe Kovacs, Darrell Hill and Rachel Fatherly all attempting to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Kovacs has the No. 1 throw in the world this year at 72 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

Also attempting to make Team USA are Brian Leap, of Bellwood, in the triple jump and Bridget Franek in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Franek will be seeking her second Olympic berth after competing in London in 2012.
