Penn State men’s golfers Geoff Vartelas and Ryan Dornes just missed the cut by one stroke for the final field of 64 at the U.S. Amateur after Tuesday’s second round.
Vartelas, who was tied for 14th after a first-round 2-under 68 on the South Course on Monday, followed it up with a 5-over 75 on the North Course. The Penn State graduate finished with a two-round 3-over 143 total. The cut line was 2-over 142 to make the 64-player match play for the rest of the week.
Vartelas, who was 4-over at the turn and 7-over after 15 holes for his Tuesday round, made a strong effort to get onto the cut line with birdies on two of his final three holes before finishing in a tie for 80th.
Dornes, a Nittany Lion sophomore, finished play on the South Course and was 1-under for his round Tuesday through 12 holes before three bogeys on the final six holes left him with a 72 to give him a 3-over 143 total.
Two other Nittany Lions also were competing in the 312-player field on the two courses at Oakland Hills Country Club outside Detroit. Chris Houston tied for 143rd at 6-over 75-71—146 and JD Hughes tied for 185th at 8-over 72-76—148.
Alex Smalley, of Wake Forest, led the field at 7-under.
