Penn State junior pitcher and State College native Mason Mellott was named to the initial watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award.

The award is given to the top relief pitcher in the country.

Mellott was one of six Big Ten pitchers and 70 players overall to be placed on this preseason list.

Mellott is currently No. 6 on Penn State’s career saves list and was one of the most important members of the Penn State pitching staff in 2019.

The State High graduate pitched in 63 innings with a 2.43 ERA that ranked third in the Big Ten.

Mellott also ranked in the top-10 in the Big Ten in walks allowed per nine innings, strikeout-to-walk ratio and WHIP.

Penn State opens its season on Friday against Bucknell in North Carolina.
