Penn State baseball: Nittany Lions fall to 1-11 on season with loss to Western Carolina

Penn State managed just five hits as the Nittany Lions fell to 1-11 on the season with a 4-2 loss to Western Carolina in the Liberty Baseball Invitational on Friday.

With the score tied at 1-1, the Catamounts took the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. Penn State managed just one hit between the third and ninth innings, a double by Greg Guers.

Tyler Kendall doubled and scored on James Coates’ single in the third for the Nittany Lions. Guers doubled and came home on Jim Haley’s single in the ninth.

Western Carolina pitchers Brian Sammons (2-2), B.J. Nobles and Tyler Powell combined to strike out 11. Nick Hedge (0-3) allowed five hits, three runs and two walks while striking out six in 61/3 innings for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State will face Liberty at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday to conclude the tournament.
