Penn State baseball: Nittany Lions roll past Canisius in home opener

Canisius starting pitcher Tyler Vavra got one out before Penn State chased him in the first inning Wednesday.

The Nittany Lions scored four runs in the first and cruised to an 11-1 win over Canisius at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in their home opener. Vavra faced six batters and allowed four runs on four hits to take the loss for the Golden Griffins (7-13).

Penn State starter Geoff Boylston gave up one run on five hits in six innings to earn the win. Boylston also struck out eight and didn’t allow a walk.

J.J. White and Jim Haley recorded back-to-back RBI singles with one out in the bottom of the first. Tyler Kendall followed with a single to load the bases, ending Vavra’s outing.

Canisius reliever Zachary Sloan started with a strikeout before Penn State’s Ryky Smith made it 4-1 with a two-run single.

Smith finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead the Nittany Lions, who added three runs in the fifth and two each in the seventh and eighth.

It was Penn State’s second straight win.

The Nittany Lions (3-13) host Indiana for a three-game series to open Big Ten play, starting Friday at 5:30 p.m.
