Penn State baseball: Nittany Lions rally from 8 down for win

The Penn State baseball team pounded out 18 hits in the game and used a seven-run fourth inning to rally from an eight-run deficit and beat Rutgers 12-10 Saturday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Jim Haley was 4-for-5 with a double and triple, Greg Guers tripled and knocked in four runs, Nick Riotto was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, and Taylor Skerpon was 3-for-4 as six different Nittany Lions had multiple hits.

Guers’ bases-clearing triple and Riotto’s two-run double highlighted the seven-run fourth for Penn State (16-26, 4-12 Big Ten), which came after staking the Scarlet Knights to a 9-1 lead. The Nittany Lions plated the winning runs with a three-run sixth, with RBI singles from Riotto and Skerpon highlighting the frame.

R.J. Devish had a two-run single in a five-run first inning for Rutgers (15-30-1, 5-12), which had just two hits in the inning but also had two hit batters and two walks.

Tom Mullin (4-0), the third of five Nittany Lion pitchers, pitched 2 1/3 innings and earned the win while Rutgers reliever John O’Reilly took the loss.

Penn State, which has won three straight, goes for the weekend series sweep when the teams meet Sunday in the final home game of the season and Senior Day.
