Penn State baseball: Nittany Lions top Michigan State to extend winning streak to five

Penn State’s Tyler Kendall and Christian Helsel each hit their first career home runs to help the Nittany Lions beat Michigan State 5-3 on Friday.

It was Penn State’s fifth straight win, matching a season-high.

The Nittany Lions (18-26, 6-12 Big Ten) took a 1-0 lead on Kendall’s home run in the second inning. After the Spartans (29-19, 11-8) tied it in the fourth, Penn State’s J.J. White gave his team a 3-1 lead with a two-run single in the fifth.

Helsel then homered in the sixth to push Penn State’s lead to three runs.

Penn State’s Nick Hedge earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits in 61/3 innings. Jack Anderson picked up the save, striking out four in 22/3 scoreless innings.

The teams continue the series Saturday at noon.

Michigan State’s Cam Vieaux allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings to take the loss.
