Nittany Lions finish Cuban tour with loss
Penn State dropped the final game of its Cuban tour Saturday 15-2 to Matanzas.
The Nittany Lions finished with a 1-3 record during its week-long tour, with Saturday’s loss the only lopsided decision. The Crocodiles turned six Penn State errors into 10 unearned runs for the easy win.
Matanzas also had a strong effort on the mound, holding the Nittany Lions to eight hits. Adrian Sosa struck out nine while allowing five hits, a walk and an unearned run over five innings. Four relievers combined to keep the Lion bats quiet the rest of the way.
Yasiel Santoya, Jefferson Delgado and Ariel Martinez knocked in three runs each for the Crocodiles, who pounded out 12 hits.
Keith Leavitt was 2 for 2 with a run scored, and Jordan Bowersox was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Nittany Lions, who flew home Sunday. An error after a Greg Guers third-inning single brought in Nick Graham with the team’s first run.
Eli Nabholz took the loss in just 2 2/3 innings of work, allowing five hits and a walk to go with eight runs, with only three of them earned.
