Baseball falls in home opener

Despite earning an early three-run lead, Penn State allowed four six-inning runs to Niagra, falling 4-3 in its home opener on Friday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Nittany Lions left-hander Taylor Lehman was tabbed with the loss, surrendering all four earned runs and getting pulled after 5 2/3 innings of work. He let up eight hits, recorded two walks, and fanned four, dropping to 1-4 on the season.

Penn State crossed home first, as Willie Burger plated Greg Guers on a second-inning double play.

The Nittany Lions picked up a couple more in the fourth inning via Burger’s two-run double.

But the Purple Eagles responded. Julian Gallup scored on a wild pitch, Greg Cullen hit an RBI double, Cullen also scored on a wild pitch, and Joel Brophy was plated by a Taylor Hackett single.

Penn State (5-10) hosted Niagara again on Saturday for a doubleheader.
