Sparked by a four-run second inning and calmed by Jack Anderson’s sixth save of the season, Penn State baseball fought off Rhode Island 5-3 on Wednesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The victory gives the Nittany Lions a four-game winning streak, after defeating West Virginia on Tuesday and sweeping a Saturday doubleheader against Niagara.
The Nittany Lions rallied after two quick outs in the second inning, the frame kept alive by an Austin Riggins single. Nick Riotto plated his teammate with a triple, Riotto scored on a throwing error, and Tyler Kendall and Willie Burger each chipped in RBI singles before the inning wrapped up.
Nick Distasio, who relieved Marko Boricich, was the winning pitcher for the Nittany Lions, earning his first decision of the season. The sophomore went 4 2/3 innings, allowing only one run and two hits.
Anderson followed Distasio, inducing three ninth-inning groundouts to finish off Rhode Island.
Penn State (9-10) travel to Illinois for a weekend series, with its first game at 7 p.m. Friday.
