Nittany Lions power past Lafayette in baseball

The Penn State baseball team exploded for nine runs in the third inning en route to a 20-12 win over Lafayette on Wednesday, extending its winning streak to eight games.

Nick Riotto and Ryan Sloniger each drove in four runs for the Nittany Lions. Riotto and Jim Haley both finished with three hits, and Greg Guers, Jordan Bowersox, Keith Leavitt and Connor Klemann each had two hits.

Nick Distasio pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four runs and five hits while striking out seven to earn the win. Jack Anderson pitched the ninth inning to set the Penn State record with his 86th career appearance.

The Nittany Lions took a commanding lead in the third inning.

Sloniger’s three-run double and Haley’s two-run highlighted the big inning. Penn State scored all nine runs in the third with two outs.

Riotto hit a three-run home run to right field in the fourth to put the Nittany Lions ahead 16-2.

Penn State (17-12, 4-2) opens a three-game series at home against Michigan State at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
