Terrapins take opener of weekend baseball series with Nittany Lions
Maryland pitcher Mike Shawaryn kept the Penn State bats quiet Friday night.
The Terrapin right-hander tossed a complete-game four-hitter in a 7-1 victory to open a three-game weekend series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Shawaryn struck out six and walked one, allowing just one earned run.
Connor Klemann was 2 for 4 with a double, and Greg Guers also doubled to highlight the offense for the Nittany Lions (24-19). Tyler Kendall’s RBI groundout scored Nick Riotto in the sixth inning for the team’s lone run.
Kevin Smith was 3 for 5 with a double and RBI, Madison Nickens collected a two-run single and solo home run and Marty Costes knocked in two runs for the Terps (22-18).
Taylor Lehman (1-8) gave up six hits, five runs — three earned — and a walk with one strikeout over four innings for the loss.
With a wet weather forecast for Sunday, Penn State has altered its schedule with a doubleheader set for 3 p.m. Saturday to close the series.
