The new Penn State coaching staff has hung onto at least two of the freshmen from the program’s 2022 recruiting class. Guard Jameel Brown announced he would be exiting the transfer portal Monday, just under three weeks after entering it.

Brown played limited minutes in his first year with the program but began to show progress and is expected to be a key piece of next year’s team. His decision to stay comes less than a week after fellow freshman guard Kanye Clary announced he would be staying with the program as well.

Those two, along with center Demetrius Lilley, are the only players on the roster and not in the portal. The team’s other two freshmen from this season — Evan Mahaffey and Kebba Njie — are in the portal but have yet to make a decision.

Two players are expected to join those currently on the roster after they committed to the Nittany Lions this month. Guard Ace Baldwin Jr. — the reigning Atlantic 10 player of the year and defensive player of the year — and wing Nick Kern Jr. both announced their decisions to join Penn State. Both played under new Penn State head coach Mike Rhoades at VCU.

That gives Penn State five players as the roster stands with the potential to retain the other two freshmen and add more transfers. VCU forward Jalen DeLoach and Virginia Tech guard Darius Maddox visited Penn State this weekend. Both are in the transfer portal.
