Sources: Penn State men’s basketball assistant coach Joe Crispin leaving for head coach role

Penn State men’s basketball will have a new assistant on staff next year. Current assistant coach Joe Crispin is leaving to become the head coach at Air Force, multiple sources told the Centre Daily Times.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein first reported the news.

Crispin joined head coach Mike Rhoades’ initial staff in 2023 after he was a head coach at Rowan, a Division III men’s basketball program.

The new Air Force head coach is a Penn State men’s basketball legend after leading the program to the Sweet Sixteen as a player in 2001. He left the program as its second leading scorer, and is now fourth on that list after he was surpassed by Lamar Stevens and now-Penn State assistant coach Talor Battle.

Battle was brought in as an assistant last season when Rhoades had an opening. This will be the program’s first open assistant spot since then.
