Duquesne routs Penn State

Penn State couldn’t contain Duquesne’s long-range shooters in a 78-52 loss Friday night at the Consol Energy Center.

The Dukes finished 17 for 34 from 3-point range in the blowout win, hitting their first five attempts and eight of their first 10 shots from beyond the arc in the second half.

Derrick Colter led Duquesne with 26 points, finishing 6 for 9 from deep. Micah Mason scored 14 points, and Jeremiah Jones chipped in with 11 points. Mason had a game-high seven assists.

Brandon Taylor scored a team-high 14 points for the Nittany Lions (2-1), and Shep Garner and Payton Banks each added 12 points.

The Nittany Lions shot 29.7 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Duquesne (3-0) finished the first half on an 11-0 run to take a 37-26 lead.

With Penn State in a 2-3 zone defense, Jones knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing to start the run. After Nittany Lions guard Isaiah Washington missed from beyond the arc, the Dukes pushed the ball up the floor, and Mason found Colter for another 3.

Duquesne’s Colter hit Darius Lewis for a dunk on the next possession to extend the lead to 34-26 and force a Penn State timeout with 1:46 left in the half.

Colter finished a layup, and Eric James made a free throw to finish the scoring in the first half. The Nittany Lions missed their final eight shots of the half.

The Dukes blew the game open early in the second half, hitting their first shot attempts — all from 3-point range.

L.G. Gill, Colter and Mason knocked down 3s on each of the Dukes’ first three possessions of the second half to push their lead to 46-28. Jones and Colter hit 3s on back-to-back possessions to give Duquesne a 22-point lead with 15:05 left.

The Dukes took a 28-point lead — their largest of the game — on a layup by Colter with 9:36 to play.
