Penn State basketball confirms games with Duke, Pitt in 2016 tournaments

From CDT Staff reports

On Wednesday, Penn State athletics confirmed that the men’s basketball team will face off with Duke on the 2016 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in November.

The Nittany Lions meet the Blue Devils in the Naismith Bracket. Eight schools will compete in the two four-team brackets, with play starting No. 19 and 20 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Penn State will host Marist (Nov. 11) and Grand Canyon (Nov. 15) in the Bryce Jordan Center as part of the on-campus series of games that prequel play at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Nittany Lions will then take on Duke Saturday, Nov. 19, followed by either Cincinnati or Rhode Island Sunday, Nov. 20.

“We look forward to the opportunity to play in the 2016 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena,” Penn State head coach Pat Chambers said in a release. “The tournament boasts a strong field and will provide an exceptional test for our team early in the season. This event is sure to be among the highlights of our non-conference schedule."

Penn State last participated in the Tip-Off Tournament in 2011, falling to then-No. 2 Kentucky and defeating South Florida in the consolation game.

Also announced Wednesday was the impending matchup between Penn State at Pitt in the inaugural Never Forget Tribute Classic tournament in Newark, New Jersey on Dec. 10.

The game will be the second game in a doubleheader series that opens with Villanova taking on Notre Dame. The tournament partners with the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, which helps support the educations of the children of Sept. 11 terrorist attack victims.
