As everything stands right now, it doesn’t look like Penn State will burn the redshirts of freshmen Will Fries and Michal Menet.
But a lot can change in little time, and Penn State head coach James Franklin has recently discussed the possibility with the offensive linemen.
“That conversation went really well,” the coach said. “Both those young men and their families are perfectly comfortable with us doing whatever we have to do to win and put the team first.”
The two will also be up with the varsity and getting plenty of reps in practice. That being said, Franklin made it clear that at this point, the status of Fries and Menet has not changed.

The coach said Fries, a tackle, would be more likely than Menet to have his redshirt burned given Penn State’s offensive line situation. Andrew Nelson and now Paris Palmer are out for the season, and with Brendan Mahon’s status in limbo, the Nittany Lions’ need is clearly at tackle.
“Michal Menet could play tackle, but he’s probably more suited inside,” Franklin said of the Birdsboro native. “So we’ll see how it plays out. You’d love to keep those guys as redshirts if you possibly can, bu tthe way this thing is playing out, you never know. We want to be prepared for it.”
