Saquon Barkley named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

AP

Surprise, surprise: Saquon Barkley was honored for his insane, record-breaking performance on Saturday night.

Barkley was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week by the conference on Monday morning.

The Heisman Trophy candidate tallied 211 rushing yards and a touchdown on 28 carries and 94 receiving yards on 12 catches in Penn State’s 21-19 win over Iowa. He also chipped in 53 return yards en route to 358 all-purpose yards — breaking Curt Warner’s Penn State record of 341 at Syracuse in 1981.

Barkley’s 12 catches was the first time in Joe Moorhead’s Penn State tenure that a player reached double-digit receptions in a single game. The back doubled his previous career-high (six against Northwestern in 2015).

His 211 rushing yards vaulted him to 3,090 for his career, making him the seventh player in school history to hit that 3,000-yard threshold. Barkley’s 4,222 career all-purpose yards has him now in sixth place.

Barkley looks to continue his fine form when the No. 4 Nittany Lions face Indiana at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
