Penn State football lands commitment from Pennsylvania athlete Lonnie White

Penn State football added another member to its 2021 recruiting class Thursday evening. In-state athlete Lonnie White announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions via his personal Twitter account.

White, who plays for Malvern Preparatory School, was previously committed to Clemson University as a baseball player. He’s a quarterback at Malvern Prep, but has been recruited as an athlete at the next level. He chose the Nittany Lions over 20 other listed football scholarship offers, including those from Michigan and Michigan State.

The in-state athlete is listed at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds on his 247Sports profile, giving him the requisite size to play linebacker or wide receiver in college.

He’s currently the No. 53 athlete in the nation according the 247Sports’ Composite rankings, which compiles several industry ratings and generates a consensus ranking, and is a three-star recruit. However, 247Sports’ recruiting analysts rate him as a four-star athlete and the No. 11 player in Pennsylvania in the 2021 class.

One of those analysts, Brian Dohn, projects White as a multi-year starter at a top-15 level program and a potential Day 3 pick in the NFL draft.

“Excellent frame with mass,” Dohn’s scouting report on White’s 247Sports profile reads. “Elite-level three-sport athlete. Plays baseball and basketball as well. Smart, intelligent player with position versatility. Played receiver as sophomore and quarterback as junior. Can also play safety. Possesses excellent burst, speed and athleticism. Extremely fluid. Possesses elite body control. As a receiver, locates ball quickly, has strong hands and is reliable. Ran 60 meters in 6.58 seconds at prep baseball report combine in 2018. Elusive with first defender after catch. Gets off line of scrimmage quickly. Tough to press because of strength. Does not waste time getting up field after catch. Has next gear to separate from safeties after catch. Knows how to set up routes. Has to work on using length to high-point 50-50 balls. Continue developing route running and be sharper into and out of breaks. Sometimes allows ball to get into body when making catch over the middle.”

White is the second recruit to commit to the Nittany Lions this week after three-star defensive end Rodney McGraw from Elkhart, Indiana, flipped his commitment from Indiana to Penn State on Sunday.

After adding White, the class now ranks No. 11 in the nation and fourth in the Big Ten after being No. 14 and fifth in the respective rankings in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
