Penn State football adds tight end from Virginia to 2023 recruiting class

Penn State football’s 2023 recruiting class picked up its first commitment Monday afternoon when tight end Mathias Barnwell announced his college decision via his personal Twitter account.

Barnwell chose the Nittany Lions over Tennessee and Virginia Tech, along with 12 other listed scholarship offers and plays high school football for Spotsylvania High School in Spotsylvania, Va. He’s one of only four players in the 2023 recruiting class that are committed to play football at a Division 1 FBS program. The 2023 class is currently finishing up its freshman year of high school.

The tight end is currently unranked because the class has yet to be rated by a major recruiting service. He’s listed at 6-foot-5 and weighs 260 pounds with a massive frame for the position.

He’s the first player in the 2023 class to commit to a Big Ten program and the only player outside the state of Florida to commit somewhere.
