More Penn State student-athletes set to return to campus Monday

More Penn State student-athletes are set to return to campus Monday as the Nittany Lions continue a phased return in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The second phase will include the return of more student-athletes from the football program, as well as men’s and women’s basketball players, according to a tweet from the athletic department.

The second phase will also include a return of Penn State football coaches, according to a source with knowledge of the plan.

Some Penn State football players were able to return as part of phase one of the plan on June 8. Those players were tested for COVID-19 and given physicals, with a one-week quarantine coming upon their return to campus before they’re allowed to work out on campus.

Workouts are taking place in Holuba Hall with a makeshift locker room also set up in the building to promote social distancing and allow Penn State to follow protocols set forth by Gov. Tom Wolf.

Penn State’s advancement to phase two comes after several football programs have seen outbreaks of COVID-19 in varying sizes in the last week.

Clemson University has seen 23 football players test positive to this point after returning to campus and Kansas State University shut down its football workouts after 14 student-athletes tested positive for the virus. The university did not specify whether or not the positive tests were football players.
