Penn State athletics reports 1 new positive COVID-19 result out of 261 tests
Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics released its sixth round of COVID-19 test results Wednesday with one new positive out of 261 new results, while nine tests are pending.
The Nittany Lions have had 10 total positives out of 1,051 tests through their first six rounds of testing. Penn State began testing athletes upon their return to campus June 8 and released the first round of results July 1.
The first eight positive tests came in the third round of announced results on July 29, and the last two positives have come in the past two rounds.
Neither the sports nor the identities of the individuals to test positive were revealed.
As part of protocols established in Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics’ return to campus plan, athletes who test positive are put into isolation for 14 days before being retested. Contact tracing procedures have also been implemented, “which includes quarantine and testing for those individuals who might have been exposed, even if asymptomatic.”
“We expect our student-athletes to follow University requirements and guidelines for limiting the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks, practicing social distancing, washing their hands regularly and not gathering in large groups,” Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics said in a statement.
Penn State announced last week it would begin releasing coronavirus testing updates on a weekly basis. The department previously released results biweekly.
