ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg has reported that Penn State co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter will not become the new head coach of Virginia.

Following reports that Poindexter was a top candidate for the head coaching job, Rittenberg shared a text Wednesday afternoon on social media from Poindexter.

“Timing is everything for both sides. There will be a day, but I’m going to stay at Penn State,” he wrote.

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reported earlier on Wednesday that other candidates would be considered over Poindexter, including Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott. Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced last week that he would be stepping down as the team’s head coach following the team’s bowl game at the end of the season.

Poindexter was a two-time All-American safety at Virginia, playing 40 games and nabbed 12 interceptions. His No. 3 jersey was retired by the program in 2009. On Tuesday, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame’s 2020 class.
