‘I feel at home.’ Penn State football adds in-state four-star running back
Penn State football added another four-star commitment to its 2023 recruiting class Monday afternoon. Pennsylvania running back London Montgomery announced he would be staying in his home state for college and committed to the Nittany Lions.
“I feel at home,” Montgomery told the Centre Daily Times. “I come out of there feeling very special. I’ve been to other colleges and I just don’t have that feeling. It’s just a special feeling. ... I’m just really excited. I know that’s the place for me.”
Montgomery is the No. 7 player in the state for the 2023 class according to the 247Sports Composite player rankings. His commitment means three of the top seven players in Pennsylvania have committed to Penn State’s class.
That played a role in the four-star running back’s decision.
“I was a Penn State fan growing up,” Montgomery told the CDT. “The best in PA stay in PA. That’s the saying. It’s just different. When you’re an in-state kid, they roar when they hear your name.”
Montgomery chose the Nittany Lions over 18 other scholarship offers, including those from Boston College and Virginia Tech. He’s listed at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds and plays his high school football for Scranton Prep where he helped the Cavaliers go 11-1 in his junior season.
The newest Penn State commit hopes to make an even bigger splash as a senior in the 2022 season.
“I want to be more of a leader,” he said. “... This year I’m just gonna stick to what I’ve been doing, getting bigger, stronger and faster.”
Montgomery said he visited Boston College near the end of June and made his final decision to go to Penn State about a week later. He spoke to his parents and coaches and said he knew he wanted to be at the school.
The rising high school senior hopes to leave a legacy as a Nittany Lion.
“I want to be known as a great player to come out of there,” he said. “But not only for football. I want to be known as someone who is always smiling, giving off energy, being a great person, more importantly. I just want to do something big that people will remember me for.”
His commitment keeps Penn State at sixth in the country according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings. The Nittany Lions also remain second in the Big Ten, behind only Ohio State.
Montgomery said he thinks the class can make a difference at Penn State.
“We’re not done yet,” he said. “I can tell you that. This class is gonna be something special. People have doubted Penn State, but they don’t know about this class yet.”
