Penn State ranked No. 15 in first iteration of 2022 College Football Playoff rankings
The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2022 season have finally arrived and despite losing twice in the last three weeks, Penn State is 6-2 overall, 3-2 in the Big Ten and finds itself firmly in the mix to make a New Year’s Six bowl game.
The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 15 by the College Football Playoff selection committee in the rankings unveiled Tuesday night.
They’re one spot higher than their AP top 25 poll ranking of No. 16. The ranking comes a few days after the Nittany Lions were defeated by the Ohio State Buckeyes in Beaver Stadium despite holding a 21-16 fourth quarter lead.
The Buckeyes are ranked No. 2 in the first CFP rankings.
The Nittany Lions have already faced two teams that were in the initial top 25 — No. 5 Michigan and the aforementioned Buckeyes.
Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State were three of four Big Ten teams in Tuesday’s rankings, joining No. 16 Illinois.
None of the team’s four remaining opponents — Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers and Michigan State — were in the top 25. The Nittany Lions will head on the road Saturday to take on the Hoosiers at 3:30 p.m.
