Penn State CB Joey Porter Jr. foregoes bowl game, declares for 2023 NFL Draft
Penn State’s top cornerback has played his last game as a Nittany Lion.
Joey Porter Jr. announced he will declare for the 2023 NFL Draft and forego Penn State’s bowl game. Porter made the announcement Wednesday evening on Twitter.
“To my teammates and coaches, I will cherish the memories we have made and the lessons we have learned together,” his statement read. “I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by men who exemplify what it means to be hard-working leaders and for that I am grateful. After careful thought I have decided to forego our bowl game and declare for the 2023 NFL Draft. From one dream to the next, I am excited to continue this next chapter.”
Porter was named a first team All-Big Ten player by both the coaches and the media Tuesday.
He recorded 27 tackles and 11 pass breakups despite only playing in 10 games after appendicitis kept him out for matchups with Maryland and Rutgers.
He’s expected to go in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, 24 years after his father, Joey Sr., was taken in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Porter’s announcement comes one day after star offensive tackle Olu Fashanu announced he’ll be returning for the 2023 season.
Kalen King will step into the role as Penn State’s top cornerback, while Johnny Dixon will backfill his role as the team’s No. 2 cornerback.
