Penn State adds transfer portal commitment from former Kent State wide receiver
Penn State has made a big addition to its wide receiver room from the transfer portal.
Former Kent State WR Dante Cephas announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions Sunday night via his Twitter account.
Cephas — who hails from Pittsburgh — was the Golden Flashes’ second-leading receiver last year with 48 catches for 744 yards and three touchdowns. He has two years of eligibility remaining and should step in and be a key contributor in the Penn State passing game next season.
Parker Washington and Mitch Tinsley, the team’s two leading receivers in 2022, will both depart the program for the NFL Draft, leaving an opening at the top of the depth chart. Harrison Wallace III, Omari Evans and KeAndre Lambert-Smith will be among the returning players who fight for snaps at the position, and Cephas should step in to be at — or near — the top of the depth chart.
The team’s receivers will likely be catching passes from former five-star recruit Drew Allar, who is expected to step in at quarterback after Sean Clifford’s departure.
Cephas is the second receiver to commit to Penn State from the portal but would be the first to stay with Penn State if he sticks. Former North Carolina State wide receiver Devin Carter committed after the team’s Rose Bowl win over Utah but has since flipped his commitment to West Virginia.
The Nittany Lions are scheduled to open their 2023 season against the Mountaineers on Sept. 2 at Beaver Stadium.
