Penn State has picked up a second transfer portal wide receiver for the 2023 season.

Former Florida State WR Malik McClain announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions Wednesday.

McClain spent his first two seasons at FSU before entering the portal this offseason. He was a four-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class and held an offer from the Nittany Lions as a high school recruit. He went on to 396 yards and five touchdowns on 33 receptions for the Seminoles over the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

The newest Nittany Lion drew comparisons from current 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins to Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins out of high school. Ivins wrote a full scouting report on McClain’s 247Sports profile page.

“A big body with a long arms and long legs,” Ivins’ report reads. “All of his 6-4 listing with a promising frame that will allow him to add muscle in college. A vertical threat on the outside that can adjust his body to make acrobatic grabs. Great at picking up yards after the catch given verified 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash. Can throw a block out on the edge when asked to be a decoy. Not the craftiest route runner. Needs to get more explosive coming out of his stance if he’s going to get open on a consistent basis at the next level. Will likely work his way into the rotation at a Power 5 school after a year or two on campus before developing into a starter. Has the potential to make an NFL roster at some point down the line.”

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound McClain joins former Kent State wide receiver Dante Cephas as the program’s offseason transfer portal additions. The two new Nittany Lions could play a major role in the offense next season as Penn State reshapes the position following the departures of Parker Washington and Mitch Tinsley for the NFL and the firing of WRs coach Taylor Stubblefield.
