Penn State adds 4-star offensive tackle to 2023 recruiting class on National Signing Day
Penn State added one more piece to its 2023 recruiting class on National Signing Day.
The Nittany Lions picked up a commitment from four-star offensive tackle Chimdy Onoh, who made the announcement on Instagram.
The four-star tackle is from Dundalk, Md. where he played for Dundalk High School. He helped the program to a 10-2 record this season.
Onoh was a late-riser as a recruit and chose Penn State over 16 other scholarship offers, including those from Michigan State and Ole Miss. He’s the No. 257 player and No. 20 tackle in the country according to the 247Sports Composite player rankings, along with being the No. 5 player in Maryland. He was offered by the Nittany Lions in December, just before the early signing period.
He’s listed at 6-foot-5, 270 pounds and 247Sports national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn wrote that he has NFL Draft potential on his 247Sports profile page scouting report.
“Has verified size and offers position versatility as tackle and guard,” Dohn’s report reads. “Has preferred multi-sport profile. Maryland 4A champ in discus in shot put in spring. Plays center on Dundalk basketball team. Ability as thrower translates into explosion and footwork on football field. Late bloomer who is growing into body and developing technique. Physically dominant player on the Baltimore County high school scene. Plays left tackle at Dundalk. Explodes at snap and is violent and is heavy-handed with initial punch. Uncoils and is physical. Has nasty streak and pushes to finish plays. High-level jumbo athlete.
“Plays with wide base and is balanced. Difficult for high school players to combat quick hands and driving legs so is dominant as run blocker. Easily pushes defender back and works hands well but needs more consistency staying engaged on block. Shows ability to scrape and get to second level. Uses natural ability well in pass pro. Combination of moving quick at snap, athleticism and length makes it hard for high school competition to beat around edge. Development in upper body strength is important to be able to compete at Power 5 level. Needs to continue to work on lower body flexibility and bending more to help in leverage battle. Will also help when blocking in space. Rarely in three-point stance even on obvious run plays. Has to be able to get under defensive ends more to be successful in run blocking. Improving patient in pass pro is important. Needs to work on technique throughout his game. Multi-year starter at Top 20 program but will take time to develop. Possesses NFL draft potential.”
Onoh’s commitment bumps the Nittany Lions’ 2023 recruiting class up from No. 14 to No. 12 in the country and it remains the No. 2 class in the Big Ten according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
