Penn State’s Sean Clifford will have ‘retirement party’ hosted by State College Spikes
The State College Spikes plan to send off Penn State’s most prolific passer with a bang.
The local baseball team will host the Sean Clifford Retirement Party, partnered with Clifford’s Limitless NIL, on July 15 at Medlar Field. A Clifford bobblehead will be given to the first 1,000 fans and a number of retirement gifts and activities are planned.
“It’s been the greatest experience of my life to play in Happy Valley, and I’m looking forward to celebrating it with Nittany Nation at Medlar Field on July 15,” Clifford said in a press release. “I’m pumped to be part of all of the fun the Spikes have planned, especially the bobblehead, and hopefully I can get some tips from my fellow retirees at the party.”
Clifford’s bobblehead giveaway will depict him rising like a rose for his Rose Bowl MVP selection with full artwork to be released at a later date. The former Penn State quarterback went 16-for-21 (76.2%) on passes for 279 yards and two touchdown passes in his final collegiate game.
Clifford set program records for completion percentage (61.2) pass completions (817), passing yards (10,382), passing touchdowns (84) and pass attempts (1,335).
Fans who arrive early will receive a copy of the 1923 team photo, poking fun at Clifford’s tenure as a sixth-year senior. They will also have the opportunity to meet Clifford during and after the game.
The Spikes are set to partner with Lion Country Kia, and fans can participate in a rocking chair giveaway, a Florida “Snowbird” trip giveaway (a one-way airline ticket) and a year’s supply of adult diapers.
Fans 25 years or older will receive the Spikes’ senior citizen discount at the Medlar Field ticket office for the game and fans can enter a chance to win the Ultimate Pickleball Set.
“All of us at the Spikes have watched Sean Clifford work his magic on the field for quite a long time, and we are honored to welcome him to Medlar Field to celebrate his career with us,” Spikes President and General Manager Scott Walker said in the release. “We are looking forward to giving Sean the sendoff he deserves at the ripe old age of 25, and we hope that in the end, our fans will say we rose to the occasion.”
Fans will sing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and will have the opportunity to sign a giant “Happy Retirement” card. The Spikes are set to welcome all senior citizens for a “Silver Sneakers” walk around the park in the morning before the July 15 game, along with retirement cake, games of 500 rummy, canasta and party favors, among other things.
The announcement of the party is the first announced event from the Spikes’ 2023 promotional schedule.
