How Joey Porter Jr. and Ji’Ayir Brown fared during the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine

Defensive backs and specialists took the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis Friday at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. Former Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and former Nittany Lion safety Ji’Ayir Brown both took their turns through drills and athletic tests.

Porter measured in at 6-foot-2.5 inches tall and 193 pounds to go with 34-inch arms and 10-inch hands.

Brown measured in at 5-foot-11 inches tall and 203 pounds, while having 31.25 inch arms and 10.125 inch hands.

NFL.com gave Porter a 6.43 prospect grade, projecting him to be a good NFL starter within two years, while Brown received a 6.36 grade, saying he will eventually be a plus starter.

40-yard dash: Porter ran a 4.46 40-yard dash, ranking near the middle of the pack among corners. Brown ran a 4.65, the third-slowest time among safeties.

10-yard split: Porter had a 1.5 second 10-yard split, and Brown had a 1.56 second split.

Vertical jump: Porter jumped 35 inches and Brown jumped 32.5 inches. Maryland’s Deonte Banks had the highest jump among cornerbacks with 42 inches while Illinois’s Jartavius Martin jumped 44 inches to lead all safeties.

Broad jump: Porter jumped 10 feet, 9 inches while Brown jumped 9 feet, 11 inches. Kansas State’s Julius Brents jumped 11 feet, 6 inches for the longest jump among corners while Martin’s 11 feet, 1 inch led safeties.

What’s next?

NFL combine workouts will continue through the weekend with quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends will have their turn starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. Running backs and offensive linemen take the field at 1 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to Porter and Brown, five other Nittany Lions are involved at the combine. Defensive tackle PJ Mustipher worked out Thursday, while tight end Brenton Strange, center Juice Scruggs, and wide receivers Parker Washington and Mitch Tinsley will work out later in the weekend.

The draft process culminates with the 2023 NFL Draft, beginning April 27.
